Their facebook page describes them as a petite gelato and chocolatier in the heart of Rondebosch. Petite could not be a more apt word for this newly opened ice cream parlour in Rondebosch Village. Unless you knew it was there it would be easy to wander right past it and then you would have missed the chance to sit outside at one of the wooden benches and enjoy a scoop of Milktart gelato and another of Turkish Delight with a gorgeous view of Table Mountain straight ahead.

Opened in December 2017 by a young Muslim couple, Cocoa Gelato is very much a newbie on the Cape Town ice cream scene and they were kind enough to invite us to come and try out their offering. The entrance of the shop looks small but once inside a cosy anteroom is revealed with a few small tables where you can sit down to enjoy their waffles and ice cream or even a cup of coffee. As they have just opened, décor is a little spare in this section. I did feel that walls needed some art to give a little more atmosphere. I’m sure that it’s in the pipeline though.

They explain that they make their own gelato and that the flavours change regularly. We have a taste of a few of the flavours and the stand out ones are the Turkish Delight with choc chips and the Milktart flavor which had a lovely cinnamon hit to it. I tasted the Fererro Roché and could feel the crunch of real Ferrero wafer and nuts in the creamy confection.

The ice cream can be enjoyed on a sugar cone or tub at R19.90 per scoop and an array of sprinkles were available in glass jars on the counter. We decided to try the gelato with their waffles. I found the waffles really good. They were perfectly light and crispy, served with a scoop of your choice of gelato and drizzled generously with Maple syrup. This comes in at R49.00.

The store also stocks an array of luxurious handmade chocolates by Tomes. You may have seen this chocolatier at the V&A Waterfront. Tomes is not a halaal supplier but they have selected only the halaal suitable chocolates from the range. The chocolates are elegantly framed by a gilded mirror and shelf and are available to buy in attractive little gift boxes at about R55 per 100g as well as slabs in various flavours ranging from R10 – R40

There is also a selection of colourful Macarons beautifully packaged in a Perspex container that will make lovely gifts.

We could not leave without trying the coffee. A cappuccino for him and an Affogato for me. The generous scoop of vanilla gelato filled my cup and proved to be way too much for me to finish but the espresso that it was made with had a lovely heady aroma and flavor and wrapped things up very nicely. If you like your coffee hot, don’t order this. It’s delicious as a dessert but not if what you want is a coffee.

It’s great to have an option for artisanal ice cream available in the suburbs and not have to drive all the way to the beachfront for it. Try out Cocoa Gelato the next time you’re in the area for some of the best waffles in town.

My favourite flavour in general is 60% chocolate ice cream or salted caramel – yum! I would love to try their Ferrero Rocher flavour.

My fav ice cream flavour has to be old school bubble gum. Theres just something about it that brings back all my childhood memories about beach drives with the family during which getting ice cream in Camps Bay was always my fav.
