Dodge City Diner is a unique retro restaurant/ice cream parlour. It’s kind of a throwback to Grease for those of you who still remember Grease.
We stopped here for the late night munchies. I had tried Dodge many years ago when they were still at the V&A Waterfront and was rather unimpressed, which meant I had never gone out of my way to try the branch at Kromboom road. In retrospect I admit I had been depriving my tastebuds unfairly. It was fairly late and yet parking was still at a premium. We had to wait for someone to leave before we could pull in. The setup is casual with tables and booths. Retro styled frames and posters lend a 50’s American flavour to the decor. You half expect a gum-chewing blonde to come rollerskating over to take your order. Our order placed at the counter, we waited some time at an empty table. The wait wasn’t overly long but it was no McD’s drive through queue either. We had bought take-outs and I’d like to go back for the sit down treatment.
I ordered a steak burger which came with chips and onion rings; and a chocolate milkshake. Now I had recently had a chocolate milkshake from Burger King which was an epic fail and had very little expectations of this one. But I had to try or I would never know right? And was I ever glad I did. The shake was so think I struggled to suck it up the straw and it was tasty and chocolatey the way it’s supposed to be.
Their menu is mainly focused on Burgers, Steaks and Milkshakes. They have sandwiches, wraps and some chicken in the mix too and a solid Kiddies menu. They do breakfast as well but they only open at 10am and breakfast is only served till 12pm.
Dodge is the kind of place that late night revellers would enjoy. and while it’s open late, they close at 10pm. Note, they are closed on a Friday morning.
