There’s a hole in your stomach but you don’t really know if you want a burger or a pizza. A juicy burger and some fries would go down really well right now, but oh some cheesy pizza goodness sounds so tempting… decisions decisions… Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to choose. What if there was a place with your two favourite fast foods all rolled into one. Enter, Pizza Perfect, Burger Perfect! They’re back! This popular Johannesburg franchise made a brief appearance in Sea Point about 2 years ago and then that branch closed down. Now they are back in Cape Town and have opened in Claremont and since this July are also fully halaal. We were invited to try some of their menu items so we’re bringing you the inside scoop.
Claremont main road, just a block or two over from Cavendish Square is extremely busy at the best of times so we went by one evening at around 7pm. We were so stoked to get parking right in front of the store. There is still some construction work happening on the block so we navigated around that and into the brightly lit store. This is essentially a fast food outlet but there are a few tables where you can sit and have your meal. It is split into the Burger section on one side and the pizza section with a proper wood burning clay oven on the other side. You don’t have to split your order though. You can order from either menu and make one purchase.
Dean, who along with his mother and brother is part owner of the store welcomed us and made some recommendations from the menu then left us to decide what we really wanted. I love all things Mexican, so the Nachos pizza immediately caught my fancy. I ordered it half n half (yes, you can do that too), and had it half veg and half mince. This was from their deluxe range at R111 for the 30cm. Their original range starts at R50 for a 23cm Margherita and averages about R85 for the larger pizzas. I enjoyed the flavor of this pizza. I liked the extra crunch from the nachos and the avo on top was quite generous. I didn’t find a big difference in flavour between the veg half and the mince half but it’s great that they had the veg option. There are several veg options on the menu which gives vegetarians more than the usual choices.
Z tried the Beef Rib burger which comes with a 110g rib patty, gherkins and tomato. The patty was good and meaty. The flavor a slightly sweet barbeque. The burger was enjoyable but did not wow me. On the upside, it was easy to eat and I did not have to rescue falling debris from my burger as I was eating. On it’s own it goes for R43 or R69 with chips and 330ml soda. In hindsight, I wished I had tried the Sirloin Steak Roll or the Ultra Perfect Burger for something more adventurous… reasons to go back. We tried a portion of their chicken wings which was perfectly done in a crispy fried coating and came with a side of sweet chilli sauce. You can opt for a hot sauce if you prefer your wings with more heat.
We took home a dessert pizza for the little guy which was covered in Bar One dessert topping with crushed Kit Kat and Smarties. Between him and his 2 young cousins they polished off the entire one by themselves.
While the set up in the store is aimed at a quick turnaround of fast food, I think that some booth seating would really warm up the place and make you want to stick around a bit longer. The staff were attentive and obviously well trained with the customers who were there. It’s almost a waste if you’re just buying and leaving.
There’s some interesting pizza toppings like Spicy Chakalaka Steak and The Caribbean with Braised Steak, Banana and Chutney that I’d love to try. Maybe if I ask nicely they’ll open a branch in the Northern Suburbs too… ?
