I was invited to the launch of Urban Low Carb and Nalane Designs last week. It being at 1 o’ clock on a Saturday, I thought I would be avoiding the Cape Town CBD parking craziness, so I was unprepared for how busy it was. The launch was at MSK Kreatief, on the corner of Church and Adderley, right in the thick of city madness. After circling the block 3 times, I managed to get a parking spot nearby.
MSK Kreatief is a little boutique that showcases local designs. An appropriate venue for the launch of local Banting friendly foodies Naadia and Shireen from Urban Low Carb and African headware designers Liabo and Lerato from Nalane Designs. The tiny space was crammed full of yummy low carb treats and later on full of keen visitors rubbing sweaty shoulders trying on the headware and sampling the guilt free foodie delights.
Urban Low Carb is a fairly new business, started by sisters Naadia and Shireen van der Bergh. Seeing the prevalence of Diabetes and blood pressure issues within their own families, they recognised the need for a change from the poor eating choices within the broader Muslim community. While sugar free, low carb and banting friendly food is not unusual to find, it is not so accesible to the Muslim community when you have to be certain of it’s halaal source. Urban low carb aims to service this gap and make healthy halaal food more accessible.
At the launch I sampled platters of trout ribbons, on roast veg and cream cheese pesto on handmade cocoloaf. I especially enjoyed the brinjal with roasted beetroot. A variety of quiche and cheescakes made it hard to decide where to begin. I so regretted stopping for lunch before I came. I sampled a thin sliver of the Chocolate brownie vanilla baked cheesecake with the plan to keep space for a sample of something else. Naadia revealed that the other Vanilla baked cheescake with Berry Coulis had a touch of cayenne in it to cut the tartness of the berries, so I simply had to try that. It was delicious but look out for the after-kick of a slight heat in the throat. We were offered a take home sample of their home-made granola which I had yesterday. I’m not really a granola lover, but I enjoyed the roasted and toasty flavour of this mix.
Urban Low Carb also does catering and can take on your small party or function. Get in touch with them on:

Nalane Designs was started by Liabo and Lerato both originally from Lesotho, who are currently, like Naadia and Shireen, studying in Cape Town. They aim to make African headware and home decor trendy, accesible and easy to wear. Using traditional African prints and fabrics they fashion from plush pillows to headbands, full head coverings and those little tiny headbands for babies.
I thought this full head covering in a funky african print made an interesting option for a hijab style with a difference. Here is Shireen from Urban Low Carb pulling it off beautifully.
