The best halaal steak restaurants in South Africa

There’s simply no compromising on a good steak. Gone are the days when you asked for your steak well done. Sacré bleu! You’re more likely to get a lifted eyebrow from your waiter, even in the halaal space. In-fact I know of a certain popular halaal spot in the Cape Town, Southern Suburbs, that simply will not do a steak well-done, even if requested…

And while most restaurants may have it on the menu, not everyone consistently gets it right. Here’s our list of halaal spots across Mzanzi that know how to do steak right.

Cape Town

The Butcher’s Wife, Belgravia
With a background in the Meat industry, (the owner of TBW also owns Pickers Meat), how could you not know how to treat a steak. This understated but busy spot on Belgravia road in Athlone has become a destination spot for a good steak. They also do great pizza and shakes.

Conscious Meat Merchants, V&A Waterfront
This newly opened eatery at the V&A Waterfront specialises in Wagyu Burgers and all things steak. They started out as Conscious Carnivores, a weekend pop-up and have now partnered with Frankie Fenner to form Conscious Meat Merchants. You can buy your special cuts at their venue at Makers Landing or enjoy their menu on-site at the eatery.

Sabria’s, Wynberg
One of my faves cos they are consistent. A semi-formal sit-down restaurant located in Wynberg. Serves curries, grills, seafood and some really great steaks. This Cheddarmelt Steak with Mushroom sauce was a real showstopper.

Johannesburg

Calistos
This Portuguese restaurant has an extensive menu and for the steak lover they have interesting choices. We recommend the Rump in the Oven, a marinated steak baked in the oven and finished off on an open flame. The Fordsburg branch was always good but sadly have closed down since Covid struck. They have 5 other branches you can visit in Johannesburg. Go here for more.

Ozzy’s Kitchen, Wynberg
The well known Ozzy’s Kitchen in Sandton is a great spot for upmarket, cheffy meals. The space is a trendy industrial chic and the food is worth it. They are a go-to place for people who love a good steak

Durban

Empire Steak, Florida Road
With a passion for great steak as the name implies, the Empire Steak can’t not do steak just right. They have an ever-changing menu and there’s something for all ages and all tastes. More info here.

The Address, Morningside
Formerly known as The talk of the Town, The Address is a popular spot serving authentic wood fired pizzas, delicious grills and fusion cuisine. With a predominantly Indian menu, they have a range of steak options to get you meat eaters excited. More info here.
