The month of Love is upon us and this week Uncle Cyril gave us some great news. Covid numbers are declining and rules are relaxing just a little. There are of course many routes your lady’s heart, or your man as the case may be. But what better combination than food and love, which is why dining out is at the top of our list. Here’s our choice of halaal restaurants in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban to set the Valentine’s Day mood for you and your sweetheart.

Cape Town

126 Cape Kitchen and Cafe, CBD
The signature restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the CBD (formerly the Hilton) offers an experience a cut above the rest. Persian Peacock, CBD
An intimate Turkish restaurant run by an Iranian family who have been in South Africa for many years. While they opened just before lockdown, they had to close down straight away and were only able to re-open in July. The restaurant has the most beautiful decor dominated by a huge luxurious mural of a peacock. The food is as authentically persian as the ambiance. A great spot for intimate lunches and dinners. Saray Restaurant, V&A Waterfront
An old favourite that re-opened this year at the Clocktower precinct at the Waterfront. With a stunning location and great views, Turkish cuisine lovers will find an authentic experience at Saray. They have also introduced a kids menu and have a play area. Booking details here.

Damascus, Sea Point
Another new spot that opened during Ramadaan this year. Headed by Liaqat Sonday the well-known owner of Spitfire in Crawford, who recognised the talent of chef Muhammed. At the heart of this restaurant is Syrian born chef, Muhammad Modrek, and the food he prepares pays homage to his roots in the city of Damascus. Eatstanbul, Gardens
The bohemian lifestyle of Kloof Street in Gardens has always been a hotspot for seekers of cuisine from different cultures. EatStanbul adds some Turkish flavour along this vibey cosmopolitan strip. Sister restaurant to Saray, which is well known for authentic Turkish food and popular with lovers of shisha, the feel of Eatstanbul is a bit different. The décor is more Mediterranean with topaz blue walls and décor accents bringing a feel of the ocean into space. It is not too big so the restaurant feels quite cosy and perfect for intimate dinners. Istanbul Kebab, Melrose Arch
Location is everything and Istanbul Kebab have chosen the perfect spot for the opening of their third branch. This vibey and trendy district is a hotspot in Jozi.
