It’s always a fresh experience when Del Forno launches their seasonal menu. Keeping things interesting for their customers is part of their winning recipe. There’s a series of core favourites that have remained for years, but every Summer and Winter, Del Forno ensures a range of specially developed dishes just for the season.
New Flavours
This Winter you can look forward to comforting slow cooked ragu inspired dishes, some Mediterranean flavours and Turkish delights. We sampled some of the new dishes for lunch this week at Killarney Mall.
This branch has become one of our favourites. They are consistently good on service and quality. I’m not shy to send back a dish that I’m not happy with (much to husband’s chagrin) and I might only once have had to to it here. It’s an intimate environment with dim lighting on the inside, perfect for a date night or the brighter upper area that faces the mall if you want something more casual.
The Beginning
We ordered the Mushroom Arancini and the Calamari starters which we had with their new Turkish Delight milkshake and a Cherry Frozen Lemonade. The 3 Arancini balls filled with mushroom, rice, carrot and cheese was yummy but they were large and way too much for a starter. I suggest sharing this between 2 people. The grilled calamari was done in a delicious seasoning and served drizzled with a lemon lemon butter sauce and side of herb mayo. The lemon butter sauce enhanced the calamari far more than the herb mayo. If you’re cheeky, ask your waiter if you can sub out the herb mayo for the lemon butter, lol.
The Turkish delight milkshake, while not overwhelmingly rose flavoured, was topped with cream and adorned with nuggets of chocolate dipped turkish delight that was very good. The cherry freezo was refreshing and I enjoy cherry as a drink flavour. But as a freezo, you do risk feeling like you are having a cherry slush at the movies. I did enjoy this drink but I would order something with more subtle or less commercial flavours in a mocktail next time.
The Middle
For mains we tried the Creamy Tuscan Chicken comprising grilled chicken fillets topped with a creamy olive and sundried tomato sauce. This was a mild but tasty dish inspired by Mediterranean flavours and is served with your choice of veg. The Signature Beef fillet with feta, mushroom sauce and olives was perfectly done and went down well with a side of mashed potatoes. And lastly, the Lamb Ragu pasta, a more than generous portion. The lamb slow cooked and melded into a creamy sauce over taggliatelli. While tasty it was even better with the addition of the fresh chilli on the side.
The End
We ended off sharing something sweet in the form of their chocolate volcano cake. A warm and intense chocolate fondant oozing with warm chocolate sauce and a side of vanilla ice cream. It’s typically served in a paper dessert cup which I feel takes away from the presentation of this dish but could also be seen to add a fun lighter note to their dessert offerings.
The Winter menu also has soup options, a couple more main dishes including calamari, chourico and a Turkish Delight Hot Chocolate which I am keen to try at another time. All in all a cosy and satisfying wintry lunch. Be sure to head over and try it out.
