Cape Town is probably Africa’s favourite city and has brought South Africa many titles in recent years. From Africa’s Leading City Destination: 2022 and 2023 to World’s Leading Festival & Event Destination: 2020, 2021. Then from World’s Leading City Break Destination: 2022 and 2023 to World’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination: 2023.
This year Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards has crowned Cape Town as the World’s Best Food City in 2024. A bit of a surprise to some as it bested culinary favourites like Tokyo, Rome, and Porto.
The award is prestigious, akin to the Oscars of the food world. So this is no mere pat on the back for the mother city but rather a celebration of its food scene made up of its multicultural heritage, weaving together African, Dutch, Malay, and Indian influences. Each bite offers a taste of the city’s complex history, with local chefs and restaurateurs embracing traditional flavours while pushing the boundaries of modern cuisine.
This award will add a boost to the Cape Town tourism industry bringing more global foodies and travellers to our shores to appreciate not only our beautiful shores and scenery but also the diversity of our cuisine.
