The Night of Power – Laylatul Qadr

Laylatul Qadr, known as the Night of Power, holds profound significance in Islam. It marks the night when the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by the Angel Jibril (AS). The Quran itself describes this night as “better than a thousand months,” emphasizing its immense spiritual value. During Laylatul Qadr, angels descend to earth, and Allah’s mercy and blessings are abundant, offering a unique opportunity for forgiveness and spiritual growth.

When is Laylatul Qadr

The 27th night of Ramadaan is widely accepted to be the night of Laylatul Qadr according to some narrations. But the exact date of Laylatul Qadr remains undisclosed. It is believed to occur during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on the odd-numbered nights. This is also a time of I’tikaf, when some Muslims confine themselves to the masjid as a spiritual retreat during the last ten days of Ramadan. This uncertainty encourages Muslims to intensify their worship throughout this period. Engaging in prayers, reciting the Quran, and making heartfelt supplications are common practices aimed at seeking Allah’s mercy and blessings.

Duas for Laylat-al-Qadr

A central aspect of this night is the recitation of Surah Al-Qadr (Chapter 97 of the Quran). Muslims are encouraged to seek out Laylatul Qadr with devotion, as acts of worship performed on this night are believed to yield rewards greater than those performed over a thousand months.

The best dua for Laylat-al-Qadr is the dua the Prophet (PBUH) taught Aisha (R.A.) She is reported to have asked the Prophet (PBUH), “O Messenger of Allah If I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say?” He said:

Say:  اللَّهمَّإنَّكعفُوٌّتُحبُّالعفوَفاعْفُعنِّي

Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibb al – afwa fa’fu anni

(O Allah, You are All-Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me).”

Signs of Laylat-al-Qadr

Laylat-al-Qadr is a peaceful night, as mentioned in the Qur’an. According to an authentic report from the Prophet (PBUH), the sign of Laylat al-Qadr is that the sun rises on the following morning with no visible rays.

Laylatul Qadr offers a profound opportunity for Muslims to deepen their faith, seek forgiveness, and draw closer to Allah through dedicated worship and reflection.
