Markets you can Enjoy this Weekend – Rain or Shine

Tired of the cold, wet winter weather keeping you indoors? Here’s where you can head for some crafts, culture and shopping and still stay dry. These markets in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban are mostly indoors or under cover and will sort out that Winter cabin fever in a jiffy.

Cape Town

The Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill, Woodstock
A variety of craft, fashion and food. They’re open every Weekend rain or shine :

TimeOut Market, V&A Waterfront
This used to be the V&A Food Market and is now part of the international TimeOut brand bring you high end and artisinal food experiences in a market atmosphere. Barakat, from Chef Anwar of the Happy Uncles is a halaal option at this market.

Bay Harbour Market, Hout Bay
Take a drive out to Hout Bay for this creative market with lots of local designer and African crafts.
Food vendors vary but Tunisian Delights for shawarma and falafel is a halaal vendor that is usually there and Fish on the Rocks – is just outside the market for fish and chips.
When: Wednesdays & Fridays 5pm – 9pm, Saturdays & Sundays from 9:30am – 4pm. No pets are allowed into the market.

Mojo Market, Sea Point
A trendy food and lifestyle market on the main road in Sea Point.
They have several halaal options including Plucky’s and Tortilla Modern Mexican.

Willowbridge Slow Market, Tygervalley
A chilled market in the centre court of Willowbridge centre in the Northern Suburbs.

A family friendly market with lots of different areas and a large play area for kids.

Johannesburg

So Jozi is not really rainy during Winter, and the days can be sunny and warm. So outdoor markets tend to fair quite well here even during Winter.

HalaalgoodsMarket, Midrand
Joburg’s ultimate halaal market is on this weekend. Don’t miss over 100 vendors of Muslim friendly food, fashion and lifestyle.

Fourways Mall Night Market (NEW)
The popular mall introduces their brand-new Night Market, launching this Friday in the Drop & Go Zone (just outside Bounce). There will be live music, artisanal eats, delicious drinks and giveaways at the launch night only. This is the start of a monthly market taking place every last Friday of the month.
When: Friday, 25 July from 4pm to 9pm

Rosebank Sunday Market
Lively weekly market in a parking lot with craft & world food stalls, plus live entertainment.
When: Sundays 9am – 4pm

Fourways Farmers Market
Open-air and under-cover weekend market featuring live bands, gourmet foods stalls and artisanal goods. It can be a bit boozy but they usually do have some halaal food options available. Located in Midrand on Taroko Farm the venue is picturesque with rolling lawns perfect for picnics. It also shares space with the Modderfontein Nature Reserve where you can go for some easy Sunday weekend hikes.
When: 9am – 6pm Saturdays & Sundays

Decorex Joburg, Sandton
Not exactly a market but Decorex Joburg, is back at the Sandton Convention Centre this weekend, running alongside 100% Design Africa, the definitive showcase of all things contemporary design on the African continent. This much-anticipated annual exhibition showcases hundreds of dynamic brands alongside themed exhibitions, exciting collaborations, product launches, insightful talks and workshops led by industry experts. 
When: Thursday to Sunday, 24 to 27 July from 10am to 6pm daily

Durban

There may be a slight nip in the air, but Winter is mild and sunny in Durban. So Outdoor markets are a thing all year.

The Saxony Night Market, Durban Westwood
Kit up for the cold with boots and coats and a lekker cup of Coffee. The most amazing food brands and the best selection of shopping brands- lovely sweaters, beautiful scarves and warm jackets all available at the Saxony Night Market
When: 5pm until late. Last Friday of every month.

I Heart Market, Durban North
A trendy market selling artisan type products from baby clothes and jewelry to art and food. I noticed two fully halaal vendors at this market, one selling Middle Eastern food and the other artisan waffles. You can expect to pay a little more for the wares in general.
When: First Saturday of every month (Save this one for next weekend)
Where: Northlands Primary, 20 Gleneagles Drive, Durban North

Victoria Street Market, Durban
Known as Durban’s oldest market, this is a well known covered market with hundreds of stalls selling spices, handicrafts, food & clothing. The Victoria Street Market is rather like stepping into another world, with its blend of all things Indian and African. While it’s not in a great part of town, and parking can be a pain, it’s very popular with tourists.
When: Daily from 8am – 5pm
