Smylies Diner in Greenside has sadly closed its doors, but it’s worth remembering the fun it brought while it lasted. It was never just about the food — though the loaded burgers, fries, and grills definitely drew people in — it was about the playful theme and relaxed vibe that made it stand out.
The diner leaned into its car-themed concept with gusto. From booths styled with car seats to tyre sinks and pedal taps in the bathrooms, every corner carried a touch of personality. It was a space that didn’t take itself too seriously, yet offered a setting that was both creative and welcoming.

The menu mirrored the concept with a touch of humour. Starters were “Minor Services,” while desserts became “Major Services.” Diners could expect hearty portions of comfort food with a twist, from towering burgers to loaded fries and grills. The Chiron Burger, layered with a patty, hash brown, and pulled brisket, was a standout for those with an appetite, while the Donner Mix Box, served in a fold-out takeaway container, brought a fun, street-food style element to the table.
Smylies may no longer be part of Greenside’s dining scene, but it offered something refreshingly different while it lasted. Casual, family-friendly, and a little bit quirky, it’s a diner that certainly made its mark.
