In the heart of Damascus, where ancient alleyways

In the heart of Damascus, where ancient alleyways whisper tales of time gone by, and the scent of spices dances through the vibrant souks, Syrian life, food and culture unfolds in a tapestry of rich and cherished traditions… Fast forward to the bustling streets of downtown Johannesburg in the midst of Fordsburg, and you’ll find the flavours of Damascus at Syrian Rose Restaurant.

We tried them out on a Saturday afternoon for a quick lunch. It wasn’t too busy but it was nice to note that the crowd inside was diverse. The service was speedy and friendly. The menu is kept fairly simple and the food is hearty but well priced. They also make their own fresh juices and fruit shakes.
We opted for the Beef Hummus plate and the Chicken Shawarma meal, and a side of Kibbeh.

I first had Mexican corn on the cob at The Fourway

I first had Mexican corn on the cob at The Fourways Farmer’s market from a vendor called @mestizo.sa. It was the first time I’d had corn this way and I was immediately hooked. The tangy spicy sauce and salty feta was utterly delicious with the sweetness of the corn. I had to try my own version and this recipe was a winner for the whole family. This makes a great braai side, so make it when you’re planning a braai and have the fire going. Or if you have a counter top griller that could work too.

Mexican Corn on the Cob

Ingredients: 4 ears of corn (mealies), shucked 2 Tbsp salted butter, melted 3 Tbsp mayonnaise 2 Tbsp lemon juice (lime juice will give a more authentic flavour if you can get them) 1 teaspoon ground cumin 50g Feta cheese (approx) chili flakes fresh coriander, chopped

Method: Parboil the corn in salted water till just done.  Mix mayo, lemon juice and cumin. Grill your corn for 7-9 minutes on a braai till slightly charred. As soon as you’re done grilling, brush the cob with the melted butter and then with the mayo mix. Sprinkle with Feta cheese, chili flakes and chopped coriander and serve while hot.

I love seeing how the smoke rises from almost every single house on the street on the 24th September. If there’s one thing South Africans know how to unite around it’s a Braai. We switched up our regular lamb chops with steak and chimichurri on the coals. It was a delicious change from the norm. 🥩🔥

We’re ringing in Heritage Day tomorrow and why not do in a true South African way....Snoek Braai Weskus style! This slightly sweet and savoury way of braaing (barbequing) snoek or cod for the rest of the world, is a firm local favourite. Serve up with potato salad, garlic paninis and grilled cheesy mushrooms and some #heritageday sunshine for the win.

Ingredients:
1 whole Snoek washed, patted dry with paper towel and lightly salted
2 tbsp apricot jam
1 tbsp butter
3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp lemon juice
Cracked black pepper

Method:
Melt butter and jam together in microwave. Combine with all other ingredients. Brush over the flesh part of the Snoek liberally about 20 minutes before needing.
Braai flesh side down first for about 7-10 minutes and turn over onto skin side. Braai till just done and firm. You can brush during braaing with leftover marinade.
Enjoy!
