HOUSE REVIEW:

Run by two generations of the Osman family in the historic Malay quarter of Bo-Kaap, Biesmiellah has been serving the local Cape Muslim community and, increasingly, tourists for 40 years.

It’s where you go when you want a taste of home, that quintessential “huiskos” that sometimes is the only thing that will satisfy. The restaurant business seems to be in this family’s genes as the popular Lounge on Kromboom is owned by Mr Osman’s son Showkat.

Biesmiellah is a simple place. It’s like going home to mom’s kitchen. The restaurant has been recently revamped and looks neat and cosy. The wood panelling and large Rakams (Islamic art) on the wall really make you feel like you’re in a diningroom in Rylands. There’s talk of expanding in the near future as the tourist trade keeps them quite busy and sometimes the place is just too small.

We were served by an energetic older waitress who has been with the family for almost 15 years. On our request she made recommendations from the menu and promptly told my husband that she would bring him a falooda made with syrup that Mr Osman had returned with from India. She was so charming we didn’t mind at all being told what to drink. Just like at mom’s.

We were served Sugarbeans with Lamb curry, Kebab(meatball) curry, Saffron rice and roti. Salad, pickles and sambals were all complimentary. This was quite refreshing as it’s common practice in most Indian restaurants to order these as extras where we are used to it as standard fare that accompanies every meal at home. Both dishes had a bite although I found the kebab curry the tastier of the two. There were lots of the classic Malay dishes on the menu like Denningvleis, Bobotie, and the sweet and sour Pienang curry along with more Indian dishes like Butter Chicken, Mutton Kalya and Akni.

It’s really all you can wish for if you’re craving a taste of your Cape Muslim home. Service was efficient and friendly in a few frills but cosy atmosphere. I’d definitely go there again!

User Reviews

  • Situated in the colourful Bo Kaap, this restaurant provided good service and completely satisfying food. We ordered the butter chicken and a salomi. The roti is absolutely delicious and we had to finish the meal with a soothing cup of tea and traditional koeksisters. The prices are reasonable and I would definitely visit again!
