Bird & Co, Durban

If you like your chicken boneless and saucy, Bird & Co has got you. We checked out the branch in Florida Fields, Durban. It’s a casual and cute spot. Ideal for a quick stop to fuel up or collect your order and enjoy on the couch at home.

We thoroughly enjoyed the chicken. It’s Portuguese flame-grilled style, but completely boneless and with a creamy, tangy peri sauce, in hot, mild or lemon & herb. The creamy sauce ensures that it has it’s own flavour profile and does not remind of you of certain other Portuguese chicken brands…

Their “Joined at the Hip” platter will give you a taste of most. It has chicken wings, chicken strips, and a chicken thigh, served with onion rings and chips. There’s also burgers, wraps and haloumi options if you’re not into chicken.

They also offer wood-fired pizza. Thin crispy bases with a range of exciting flavours and well catered for vegetarian options. They do half n half so we opted for the Margarita and the Bird & Co which has mozzarella, chicken, lamb chorizo, caramelized onion, peri mayo, avo & rocket. While the Margarita was great I found the other half a bit too meaty. I’m keen to try the Ernesto next time – Mozzarella, lamb chorizo, gorgonzola, figs & rocket, yum!

The pricing is on par with said other Portuguese chicken brand. A half deboned chicken with side is R120, and a whole is R220. Burgers start at R74 and Pizza’s average R120. They don’t have a kids menu but they do have chicken strips, and pizza which is always a winner with the kids.
