When you’re in the mood for Indian food there’s few places that can scratch that itch as well as an basic Indo Pak joint run by Pakistani and Indian chefs from the Motherland.

Such is the case with Bismillah Restaurant in Belgravia, also known as Cape to India, which is in fact part of a group of restaurants in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Their other branches are in Gatesville in Cape Town, Forsburg, Melville, Ormonde, Lenasia in Johannesburg and Laudium in Pretoria.

We joined my uncle and family for a vibrant family supper in June. As we were a big group we got to try several of the dishes on the menu, although even our big group did not make a dent in the variety that is available.

The restaurant is of the no frills variety. It’s basic with little effort made for ambiance. The purple tablecloths with Indian print gave a cursory nod to the subcontinent. But it’s clean enough and staff are speedy. Service is basic so don’t expect to be checked on regularly.

We started with a hot & Sour Soup which was a good choice for the cold weather. The flavour was good but I found it a little thick. One bowl serves about 4 people so it’s generous for R99. The steak sizzler with the creamy sauce at R145 was amazing, the steak perfectly done. I wanted to try something different so I went for the Chicken Chop Suey which comes with Crispy Noodles. It was ok, I found it a little bland and wouldn’t order this again. Taufeeq’s Bunny Chow was tasty, and Zulfi enjoyed the Keema Curry with really good naan. Their aloo paratha was also really good and flavourful. The dishes were spicy but not overly hot. I also had a Bombay Crush but can say that I have had better.

I found the prices more affordable than most other restaurants of the same kind. So if you’re just in it for the food, Bismillah offers a good informal Indian or subcontinent eating experience.

Note: Bismillah Restaurant is not to be confused with Biesmiellah in Bo Kaap, which is an iconic tourist destination in Cape Town.
