HOUSE REVIEW:

Two months ago Brash, a lively and popular smash burger joint took the leap and went halaal certified. I dove headfirst (with gusto and a napkin in hand) into their menu on Sea Point’s bustling strip to get the lowdown.

Brash exudes a 70’s retro style with classic diner charm: a snug, chrome-accented space, perfect for intimate burger affairs. It’s cosy and yep, often packed. Expect some elbow rubbing with fellow burger aficionados (literally).

We were lucky to get a table which emptied just as we finished placing our order at the counter. The tiny bar table with metal stools was just big enough for the three of us.

The menu’s straightforward: smash burger Classic or smash burger Mack Daddy. Both burgers comprise 2x smashed beef patties, brioche bun, american cheese, onion and pickles. The only difference is the sauce. The Classic has ketchup and mustard and the Mack Daddy has their signature sauce which is mayo based. As someone who really does not enjoy ketchup this was perfect for me.

Service was unexpectedly quick and we got our order in just over 5 minutes. This was a generous burger. The patty is smashed quite thin but there are 2 patties as a standard. I liked the thin slightly crispy edges peering well over the edge of the roll, and we all found the burgers quite filling. Flavour is good and kept simple, but nothing that you’ll remember and still be craving days later. The skinny fries were a huge portion and done golden crispy and just right. At R150 for burger and fries this was expensive. The chocolate shake was really good but also expensive at R60. They offer an ice tea or lemonade or go for the 50:50 mix of the two, which I chose. I really enjoyed this mix and highly recommend it. No Coke alternatives unfortunately.

If you arrive expecting a fancy steakhouse vibe, prepare for a reality check – this is burger bliss, not a three-Michelin-star restaurant. But when the first bite hits that crisp edge and you’re mid-conversation with a fry in hand, you’ll forgive the hustle and bustle. For an eat and dash experience this was very expensive. At R600 for 3 people it’s not a spot you’ll frequent too often for just burgers and fries.

The Verdict

Brash Burger nails what it promises: a focused menu with properly done smash burgers.

  • Go for it if you’re after a smash burger that’s true to form, love fries like a soulmate and thrive on quick, buzz-worthy service.
  • Avoid if you crave spacious dining, thick-cut patties, and leisurely meals.
