HOUSE REVIEW:
Eastern Food Bazaar is located in the old Wellington Fruit Growers Building that stretches between Loop and Darling Street in Central Cape Town. It’s a bustling canteen-style eatery perfect for a quick lunch stop or a casual supper. As the name suggests, they do predominently eastern food. Tuck into typical North Indian Curries, Tandoor dishes, Chinese, Shwarmas, Falafel, Punjabi and my personal favourite the Chicken Masala Dosa which is a crispy savory pancake from South India filled with spicy chicken and cheese and served with a side of dhal and sambal and various sides and sauces you can help yourself to. It’s easy to eat, tasty, huge and filling and at R25 your pocket will be smiling. In fact, the prices are one of the reasons Eastern food Bazaar is so popular. You can get a full meal for as little as R20 for a Bean Bunny Chow to R35 for Butter Chicken.
Treat yourself to a lassi or ice-cream from the ice-cream corner. I find the food generally a bit mild for Indian food but it’s always tasty. Perhaps they’ve tailored it to the largely corporate customers they get from the CBD. The system is simple. Walk the passage and drool at the array of choice you’re faced with. Be careful of the lunch and supper rush as it can get difficult to get close to the counters then. Make your choice and order at the till. Collect your food at the relevant counters and enjoy. Seating is available downstairs and upstairs. I’m told that it’s a bit quieter upstairs if you prefer. If you’re eating with your hands (Indian style) there is a wash basin downstairs to wash up when you’re done. Toilets are also available downstairs.
The Eastern Food Bazaar offers catering for corporate & private events in their own private venue above the restaurant. This upmarket venue is capable of seating 80 – 100 people. For events larger than 20 people a booking is required as the demand for this venue is high.
