One of my favourite movies was the League of Extraordinary Gentleman. Apart from the great cast and the inter-twining tales of heroes from a time when books ruled, the turn of the century architecture is what really did it for me. Walking into Kahvé Road was like being an extra on the set of a scene from just that era. Starting with the vintage style coffee bar and ornate dark wood shelving and not to mention the heady scent of coffee beans roasting. You could be forgiven for thinking you were in a colonial drawing room in 1911.

Now turn to the other side of the entrance and feast your eyes on the row upon row of the most decadent desserts displayed Parisiene Café style. Every attention to detail has been made to make you feel you are in a classy establishment. Whether you’re sitting at the long curved booth or the leather bound chairs, comfort is a priority.

Having recently opened Kahve Road invited me to come and try the new menu. The elegance of the décor and ambiance has been retained from before. The low lighting inside feels like a respite from the harsh lights of the mall and has a an instant calming effect. Presentation is everything here. Even the waiters are immaculately turned out. Our waiter was helpful and very knowledgeable of the menu. They have made sure that a lot of training has gone into their staff.

Coffee is very much the cornerstone of the offering. You can enjoy a coffee at the coffee bar counter or even pop in for a takeout. The new coffee beans were available for sale but the coffee pods are still in production. Soon you will be able to purchase sleeves of the signature coffee pods to enjoy at home.

The menu is a cafe style menu with predominently light meals but the dishes feel earthy and substantial. You wouldn’t head here for a steak dinner though. We ordered a light breakfast for my sister of two perfectly poached eggs with hollandaise sauce and roasted tomatoes served on toasted multigrain bread – R69. This comes with a side the choice of which was fries for her. I had the Creamy Mushroom Risotto made with white mushrooms and shitake mushrooms garnished with grated karoo crumble and rocket – R75. I found this subtle but tasty and light enough to still manage a dessert afterwards.

The drinks menu might have you throwing your arms up in dismay as there is a lot to choose from. They have hot and cold teas and coffees of various flavours, fresh juices and signature drinks. I opted to try something different from the coffee menu, an Iced lime espresso, a double espresso with a twist of lime, ice and sparkling water. In truth not something I’ll order again. The combination of lime and coffee did not work for me. My sister requested an Earl Grey tea and was offered instead one of their signature teas that comes close to the flavour of Earl Grey. I love the way it was served with a little hourglass timer to ensure that it is brewed for just the right amount of time. They are nothing if not novel.

From the curved dessert counter with its array of sweet and savoury pastries, chocolate bon bons, eclairs (an understatement), Mousse domes, (another understatement) and the ever trendy Macarons. You cannot call this just dessert, it’s “Couture Patissirie” as they put it and I couldn’t agree more. We had a Salted Caramel and Pecan dome and a Cardomom and Banana Cheesecake. The cheesecake was divine and we only managed half but it was the Salted Caramel dome that did it for me. The texture of the ‘marshmallowey’ mousse was perfect and the flavours of caramel and salt were balanced just right without being overwhelmingly sweet. Their Cappuccino is served in their signature style on a small wooden tray in handcrafted clay cups with a small glass of sparkling water and a tiny cookie on the side.

There are many more dishes on the menu that I still plan to try like the Brioche french toast with cured lamb strips, caramalised banana, perfectly poached egg and pure maple syrup, doesn’t that sound to die for! The cheeseboard also promises to be worth the return trip – five cheeses served with hummus, red onion marmalade, olive tapanade, smoked maldon salt, lemon herb butter, candied pecans, multigrain toast and fresh ciabatta… who can resist that?!?

This is a lovely place for small intimate lunches, girly breakfasts, or to impress the boss with an out of office meeting. An even better spot when you just feel like indulging your sweet tooth and enjoying a good cup of coffee.

  • I had very high hopes for this location as my husband and I are always looking for good, halal food places to try. We loved the setting but the service was poor. I ordered the ciabatta with mushroom sauce and salmon and got what seemed like half a bread cut length-wise with a drizzle of mushrooms and a salmon rose on the side. 0 points for presentation. The bread was dry and thick. I ended up cutting the bottom halves off because it was simply too thick to eat, especially with the lack of topping. I mentioned that it was a poor offering for R120 and the waitress said “er, I see what you mean” and then walked away. Utterly disappointed because I honestly love supporting Muslim owned establishments and I don’t mind paying for a different eating experience but this was a complete waste of my money.
