Observatory has always been one of my favourite places in Cape Town. It has that eclectic vibe. Sandwiched between gritty Woodstock and pulsing Salt River, it is home to a sub-culture of artists and entertainers.

Lower Main Road is packed with eateries and nightlife and if you’re into the comedy scene, you would at some point have made it to The Armchair Comedy theatre. Mo’s Diner located on the corner of the Lower Main and Wrench is a cosy spot, without pretension leading into this popular cultural precinct.

There is all of 3 small tables and 3 high tables with stools to accommodate patrons. For late afternoon on a weekday they were full and we were lucky to get a table as another couple was just leaving. Our waiter was calm and patient considering how full they were and that he was the only one serving.

It was chilly, and I ordered a hot toddy type drink of cinnamon, honey, ginger and grapefruit. It was delicious and just what I needed as I had been battling with a scratchy throat for a few days. I also had the Korean Fried Chicken sandwich on sourdough and Zulfi had the Salmon sandwich with an Iced Coffee.

The Korean Chicken sandwich was exceptional and packed full of chicken and Asian salad. It was so flavourful and the salmon sandwich paled by comparison. But even without comparison, we both felt the salmon sandwich could use more flavour. The iced coffee was good, but note it is the frappe type with ice and milk and not a milkshake with ice cream. Prices are ok. Our 2 sandwiches and drinks came to R250.

Because it’s small it’s not great for big groups, but it’s a good spot for a quick bite, casual meeting or catch-up with your bestie.

Mo’s Diner’s menu is that of a fusion cuisine eatery, coffee shop and deli. They also serve burgers, smoothies, waffles and all-day breakfast! Plus, I really like the quote on the front door. Find it in the image gallery…
