HOUSE REVIEW

Kenilworth Centre in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town has become a hotbed of halaal eateries. Some of the long standing restaurants have become halaal with the new revamp of the mall late last year and others opening up have seen the value of going halaal. Mugg & Bean is a new addition to the mall and is currently the only halaal branch of this popular franchise in the country.

We visited on the long weekend only to find a 20 minute queue before we could get a table. On speaking to the manager I was told that this has been the case every weekend since they opened. Suffice it to say, Muslim foodies have been waiting eagerly for another halaal branch since the Vangate Mall branch closed a few years ago.

We decided to wait and finally got a table (yes, I know it was only 20 minutes, but when you have a restless 4 year old in tow who was promised waffles and ice cream, it can feel like 2 hours). In spite of the restaurant being full to capacity, the service was efficient and we didn’t wait long for our food. The menu is the same as all the other branches with the obvious substitutions for halaal meat.

Mugg & Bean Hungry for Halaal

A range of decadent looking breakfast options were tempting so we opted for the Big Ben and the Famous One breakfast. The Big Ben is an impressive looking toasted English muffin topped with baby spinach, fresh tomato, hashbrowns, cheddar, turkey, macon, deep-fried onion rings & two poached eggs, drizzled with hollandaise sauce. The menu said it was ideal for sharing. I was able to finish this on my own. So don’t opt to share if you’re hungry. The Famous One consists of two eggs, macon, a sweetcorn fritter, grilled tomato & rosemary-salted fries, served with a slice of toast. This was quite filling for the hubby. I quite liked the sweetcorn fritter myself. The gooseberry and apple ice tea was quite good and it being sugar free was a guilt-free delight. I liked the brand new black crockery and interesting serve ware for the milk. Of course we could not do Mugg & Bean without trying the coffee. The medium strength filter coffee blend was just perfect.

Taufeeq was promised waffles, and to our disappointment we discovered that Mugg & Bean no longer does waffles. But we managed to avoid drama and tears with a kiddies order of chocolate chip flapjacks and ice cream. The kiddies order was really just one big flapjack and we had to order a second portion for him as he enjoyed it so much, and like Oliver, looked up with those pitiful puppy eyes and I just melted. At R79 and R69 for the breakfast dishes I thought pricing was ok. But I thought R21 for the single kiddies flapjack and ice cream a tad overpriced and R29 for a small kids milkshake is definitely too steep.

The fact that it was so busy made it quite noisy and a bit rushed. I’d like to go soon at a quieter time and have a more relaxed meal. There’s some interesting breakfast skillets on the menu including Shakshushka as well as a Sesame Crusted Buttermilk Chicken Burger that almost won over the Big Ben. But all in all a good experience. I was very impressed that they did not drop the ball the entire time we were there in spite of the crowd.

  • What I love about Mugg n Bean in KC is that the waiters are all so friendly! We were seated as soon as we got there, and immediately the waiter was warm and welcoming. He did his best to accommodate our requests and some last minute changes. The food at Mugg n Bean is always so delicious! I ordered the lemon meringue which was so beautifully rich, and looked absolutely delicious. After seeing my brother’s falafel burger, my sister couldn’t resist changing her order to have the same. My only disappointment was the fact that some of their items they used to serve are no longer on the menu. I only found out afterwards that they still made their infamous giant flapjacks, even though they are no longer advertised on the menu. Other than that, gold stars all around!

  • Went to mugg&bean Kenilworth waited 10min for service and not ever busy and get coco that u people call bottomless hot chocolate false advertising I would like feed back on this

  • We went to Mugg and Bean, Kenilworth Centre today for a birthday breakfast with our family. A group of 16 adults and 3 kids…we were seated and had one of the best waiters any big family could ask for….Mr Happy More…compliments to him…patient and always smiling while assisting the hungry ones. Everything ordered was served and thoroughly enjoyed ..no problem with our food either. The problem came when tea was served….really weak tea …Ceylon tea…my sister decided to ask the waiter to please bring a tea bag so that she can have a stronger cup of tea….to which he responded that he will have to check with the manager….enter manager Eugene….what an attitude…he tells her he will give a tea bag but we have to pay….she says but this tea is so weak, will you drink tea that looks like this ..clearly somebody added too much water when making it…to which he responds…well if you not happy then I will take the tea back and remove it from your bill….whaaat…u did not just say that….a table of 16 people and you refuse 1 tea bag to fix a shitty cup of tea…omw….ok so she not happy she gets up and goes to him and tells him that she not happy that he would now loose us, the whole table, as Mugg and Bean customers over a tea bag costing them less than R5….his response …ya ya it’s fine ( who allows and gives him the right to brush her off like that nonchalantly)…this too in front of the owner…..when she asks the owner how he would allow his staff to treat a customer like that…he apologises but can still not give her a better cup of tea…..we had a bill of R1350….so next time I will take my business and family to a company that cares about the customer and not the tea bag ….WHAT A PATHETIC EXPERIENCE!!!….

      • I have read the tea bag story…. I think its disgusting… As for the Manager Eugene ????. I had breakfast at Mugg & Bean KC awhile ago with a friend of mine…. We had ordered the same meal … Sesame Crusted Chicken Burger….. Which I throughly enjoyed… My friend does not eat Rolls or Bread therefore his roll was left on his plate and he flipped it over and much to my dismay the bottom of the roll was mouldy…. When I saw this it struck me that my roll was also mouldy as we had ordered the same meal…. |That left a sour bitter taste in my mouth…My friend didnt want me to say anything and i just left it as such but on the Monday i called Mugg & Bean…. Two phone calls later I was confirmed by Eugene that all the rolls they received that weekend was mouldy.. Something to do with the supplier…. He told me to drop him an email which I have done and to date no response…..

An apology was needed and wasn’ t even forthcoming…. I will not complain for nothing but to eat a mouldy roll is not on….. Not a good experience at all…..

  • The service was amazing, and oh that ice tea is too die for. My husband has a milkshake and flapjacks, he devoured everything without offering me to taste, so that was a good sign.
I ordered the mix snack platter to share with the kids and they loved it.
All in all we had an amazing experience and will definitely be back
