Pronounced Faa-Thee, this cosy eatery serves up authentic Vietnamese food in a simple unfussy setting on Kenilworth’s Main Road.

Sister restaurant to Pho & Bun in Diep River you can expect a very similar menu of Pho, which is a brothy and fresh Vietnamese soup in Chicken or Beef, and Bahn Mi, which is a a baguette illed with a variety of ingredients, typically including meat, pickled vegetables, and chilli peppers. Also on the menu are Fried and Steamed rice dishes with the addition of your choice of meat, chicken or prawn, dumplings, dim sum and noodles.

On a weekday afternoon they were very quiet and we had the place all to ourselves. I started with a Vietnamese coffee to take the edge off the Winter chill. The intense coffee is perfectly offset with the condensed milk and served in a vietnamese coffee drip with the glass in a ramekin of hot water so the coffee stays hot.

We opted for the Prawn Fried Rice and the Chicken Steamed Rice. The Prawn Fried Rice was generous with large prawns and egg in the rice. We found it a little bland, but the table condiments of red chilli flakes and a type of pickled peppers and chillies made for just the thing to spice it up. The Steamed Rice with Chicken was quite flavourful. The chicken was saucy and stir fried with carrot and onion. It comes with a side of clear sauce in which I could smell the fish sauce quite strongly. But coupled with the rice and chicken it enhanced it perfectly. We also tried their prawn dumplings which we also found a touch plain but were good with the soy sauce.

They offer boba drinks but did not have on the day so we settled for Bos ice teas. While they have a variety of coffees, the drinks menu is limited. To end off we shared a Cinnamon Honey Pancake which I found a bit too sweet.

Service was ok, I felt our waiter could have explained the dishes a bit better. Our total came to R480 which is not bad. It’s a good spot if you’re passionate about authentic Vietnamese and Asian flavours.
