Urban Low Carb
Updated: 28-03-2019
Urban Low Carb is a catering company based in the Southern Suburbs in Cape Town, started by sisters Naadia and Shireen van der Bergh. Seeing the prevalence of Diabetes and blood pressure issues within their own families, they recognised the need for a change from the poor eating choices within the broader Muslim community.
While sugar free, low carb and banting friendly food is not unusual to find, it is not so accesible to the Muslim community when you have to be certain of it’s halaal source. Urban low carb aims to service this gap and make healthy halaal food more accessible.
At the launch I sampled platters of trout ribbons, on roast veg and cream cheese pesto on handmade cocoloaf. I especially enjoyed the brinjal with roasted beetroot. A variety of quiche and cheescakes made it hard to decide where to begin. I so regretted stopping for lunch before I came. I sampled a thin sliver of the Chocolate brownie vanilla baked cheesecake with the plan to keep space for a sample of something else. Naadia revealed that the other Vanilla baked cheescake with Berry Coulis had a touch of cayenne in it to cut the tartness of the berries, so I simply had to try that. It was delicious but look out for the after-kick of a slight heat in the throat. We were offered a take home sample of their home-made granola which I had yesterday. I’m not really a granola lover, but I enjoyed the roasted and toasty flavour of this mix.
Urban Low Carb does specific products to order and can also take on catering for your small party or function.
