HOUSE REVIEW

Did someone say luxury dessert spot? Wild Sugar opened as a patisserie operating from a kiosk in Mall of Africa 6 months ago. They have now moved to a bigger space, still using the kiosk setup, but that accommodates a seating area and a café menu.

We stopped there after a quick spin of the Halaal Lifestyle Market on Sunday afternoon. I liked the sidewalk café feel and the choice of padded velvet scalopped armchairs and marble look table tops gives it a more luxurious finish.

We had a short wait for a table, which gave me time to ogle the decadent works of art on offer. There is nothing ordinary about these desserts. Think Ferrero Croissant, literally enrobed in chocolate, Baklava Tea Cake, Cheesecake Truffles, Salted Caramel Pretzel Shortbread and Brownie Slabs that feed 4. They also have a few savoury options which includes stuffed parathas, homemade pies and sliders.

While waiting I had the chance to chat to the owner Shanaaz Osman. Originally hailing from Durban, she has the perfect personality for this business. Passionate about her craft and a willingness to engage with her customers. Her friendliness and warmth made us feel like we were talking to an old friend.

Once seated we chose to share a steak paratha and cheesecake truffles. Service was a bit slow and our dessert came before the main. But our server was friendly and knew his stuff. The steak paratha was not overly stuffed. The paratha itself was buttery and crisp and the filling was tasty without being too spicy.

The cheesecake truffles comes with a choice of 3 truffles and a butterscotch sauce. I chose the Snickers, Peppermint and Lotus Biscoff. It was already drizzled with a little sauce which I thought was a bit spare. I mentioned this to the waiter and he brought some extra sauce to pour over. In order of preference we loved the Snickers then the Lotus and then the Peppermint. None of these were overly sweet which was perfect for me. And the extra sauce came in handy.

We rounded this off with a beautifully presented hot chocolate. I had seen it served to another table and could not resist. It’s made from scratch and cooked, not just powder added to milk. Unfortunately my serving was scorched and had a burnt taste. However they promptly took it off the bill and offered me another.

The pricing is luxe. The paratha was about R95, croissant is about R65 and the average dessert is R130. But the desserts are wow! so you know what you’re paying for. It’s not the kind of dessert you buy because you need a quick sugar fix. You’re going the mindfully enjoy this visually first and slowly savour it till the last bite.

They are only operating with seating for 3 weeks and so teething problems are expected. But they will iron these out soon. It’s a definite do-again and I plan to go back for that Philly Cheese Slider!
