HOUSE REVIEW:
I first came across Eric Labuschange at the Willowbridge Slow Market about 6 years ago where a decadent looking brownie lassoed me with invisible rope and pulled me over, crying come on over, you know you want me. As I enquired about the brownie the lady at the table pushed forward this fresh faced 16 year old and proudly told me that he was the evil genius behind this devilish concoction. It is truly the best brownie I have ever tasted.
Eric Labuschange started young from his parents kitchen. He was always to be found at the weekend markets and 6 years later he has a factory in Stellenbosch, and has opened a kiosk in Canal Walk, with plans underway to open another at the V&A.
I was thrilled recently when I was at Canal Walk and walked past this new kiosk selling gorgeous Brownies and Macaroons. But what caught my eye was the Rocky Road slice. It’s that powdery one in the middle. Crammed with Marshmallows, Macadamia Nuts and Cherries, it has become my favouritest treat from Yummi Chef. I never leave the mall without a quick stop to pick up a slice.
There are about 15 flavours of brownie. Choosing is not easy, trust me. Think Dulce de Leche which is home made caramel and cinnamon or Peanut butter mousse with honeycomb, or Cranberry and macadamia nut nougat. See, not easy at all. A slice will set you back from about R30. Macaroons are in the region of R10 each.
Yummi’s products are all made from high quality ingredients which are sourced locally where possible. Sustainability is one of their major concerns, and therefore one of their favourite ingredients used in almost every single product, chocolate, is certified Fairtrade and made from organic cocoa beans.
All their products are also gluten and wheat free, allowing for the enjoyment by individuals that are intolerant to gluten or have wheat allergies as well. The factory in Stellenbosch is certified halaal and supplies their outlets. The canal walk store is in the process of getting it’s certification. And they have an exciting new product they are developing for the retail market. A gelatine free Marshmallow which will be a first for SA.
They supply for events such as birthdays and weddings and supply restaurants and coffee shops. You can get your fix along with a great cup of fairtrade coffee at their kiosk in Canal Walk.
