Moulood-un-Nabi is widely accepted by most Muslims

Moulood-un-Nabi is widely accepted by most Muslims to signify the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), on the 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal. The annual gathering has been happening in the Cape since the early days of Islam in the region. It's a time to come together & join in celebrating the life & teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Moulood had been practised since the time of the Ottomans, & was even declared a public holiday in 1588. However, with the advent of Wahhabism–Salafism, Deobandism & Ahl-i Hadith, some scholars believe moulood should not be observed as it is a form of bi’dah or innovation, which was'nt practised by the Prophet (SAW) or the Sahaabah.

So what exactly happens during a Moulood? Essentially it entails the coming together of the community, the recitation of the salawaat, qir’ah & thikr, the remembrance of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

In CPT there is a tradition of the women all dressed in white, coming together for “rampies sny”, the cutting of lemon leaves, which is drizzled with rose water & oils and is then put into small packages & distributed in the community. The scent, believed to be a favourite of the Prophet is intended to act as a reminder in the effort to leading a pious life. This tradition is believed to be of Indonesian origin from where many of the early Muslims in the Cape came from.

There is also the tradition in the Cape of the Marching Band that leads a procession of children& adults in the community to the local mosques where the event will be hosted.

According to an article from VOC Radio, and Shaykh Fakhruddien Owaisi, past & present Ulama from the four Madhabs (Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali) have considered the commemoration of the Prophet (SAW) birth as being Mubah, i.e. permissible, as there is no evidence in the Shari ah that prohibits such an event. However, while commemorating the Maulood cannot be considered Haram, it also must not be considered Fard as it is simply a beneficial practice & not obligatory.

Mosso restaurant has been popping up on my feed fo

Mosso restaurant has been popping up on my feed for some months with the promise of luxury Turkish dining and sophisticated spaces. As the weeks drew out towards their opening I was left wondering if they would actually deliver on this promise. After their soft opening last week I was unable to resist the glamorous promise from their Instagram page and I went to try them out this week rather than wait as I usually do for the hype to die down.

Located in the LXX Sandhurst Shopping Centre, a newly opened luxury shopping complex, the restaurant is a masterpiece of marble surfaces, luxurious fabrics, crystal chandeliers and polished finishes.

Service was excellent. Food is very similar to Istanbul Kebab as they are from the same stable with some different items. Spot the onion flower as at Nus’ret via Istanbul. Desserts need some conversation.

Loved the private dining room and separate mens and ladies salaah facilities.

The Hyatt Regency in Cape Town has launched a phil

The Hyatt Regency in Cape Town has launched a philanthropic program linked to their 126 Cape Kitchen and Café, where 10% of sales of their Cape Malay Buffet every Friday to Sunday will be donated to Gift of the Givers.

On a gloriously sunny day, in honour of this initiative, Hungry for Halaal was invited to lunch. Maryam Rumaney attended and got to realise a childhood dream by meeting Dr Imtiaz Sooliman who was to be the guest speaker at this event.

Lunch was a Cape Malay inspired buffet that consisted of a savouries station, with samosas, daltjies, bread and papadums. True to the Cape Malay style, the savouries evoked flavours of culturally unique spices and brought back memories of my childhood of treats served to me by the mothers of friends and neighbours. The buffet had a good variety in dishes, and I appreciate that it was not overwhelming in the number of options on offer. The size of the variety was thus optimal and allowed the guest to savour a taste of everything. The buffet caters for vegetarians and pescatarians too.

The highlight of the lunch was the guest speaker, who delivered a soul-touching talk. The founder of Gift of the Givers, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, spoke about his journey since establishing this remarkable organisation. Dr Sooliman’s journey is indeed profound and is a sounding board of inspiration for us to be the change we wish to see in the world.

Luxury halaal dining spots are slowly on the rise, even more so in Johannesburg than in Cape Town or Durban. This could be due to greater demand but also due to higher spending power in the City of Gold. Luxury restaurants come at luxury prices and a great many of the Joburg Muslim community are no strangers to the luxury life.
Even the East Rand, which is low-key snubbed as the country cousin, has been abuzz and rapidly growing it’s contingent of halaal eateries. They now sport their own luxury eatery in the form of Alta Gracia Restaurant.

Located at Atlas Junction on the border of Boksburg and Benoni, Alta Gracia offers elevated dining in a sophisticated setting. The setting is a throwback to 1930’s lounge decor. A cross between old world style and modern finishes. Slick marble tabletops contast with plush floral printed upholstered dining chairs and modern lighting. The waiters are outfitted in dapper pinstripes with waistcoats, complete with bowler hats. You feel a bit like you’re in a mobster movie, which is great for a bit of escapism from the daily grind.

When Zulfi returned from his work trip to Morocco

When Zulfi returned from his work trip to Morocco a few months ago, he was gifted with the most spectacular authentic Harissa paste. The smokey and spicy flavour is not everyone’s cup of tea but I’ve used it in various dishes and it’s always been a hit.

I wasn’t sure it would work with fish as the flavours might be too intense but my fears were unfounded and used sparingly with this coconut cream sauce it paired very well resulting in delicious and balanced flavours. This is an easy meal ideal for a week night dinner or even when you want to do something special.

Harissa Grilled Fish with Coconut Coriander Cream Sauce
Fish

500g Fillets of Basa fish or Hake
1 Tbsp Harissa paste
2 Tbsp (approx) Olive Oil for drizzling
Salt and cracked Black Pepper
1/2 cup Cake Flour
2 Tbsp butter and 2 Tbsp olive oil for frying

Wash and pat dry the fish with paper towels.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil.
Smear the harissa paste over the fillets.
Lightly coat with flour on both sides.
Melt butter and olive oil on medium heat.
Add fish and allow to fry undisturbed for about 5 minutes. Turn and fry the other side for 3 to 4 minutes. If your fillets are thick allow for slightly longer cooking times.
Remove and drain on paper towels.

Coconut Coriander Cream Sauce

1/2 cup of Coconut milk
1 tsp flour
1 Tbsp butter
1 clove garlic crushed
handful chopped fresh coriander leaves
Pinch of salt

Melt butter on low heat. Add garlic and cook briefly for a minute without letting it brown.
Add flour and cook the roux for 2 minutes.
Add the coconut milk and stir quickly or use a whisk to prevent lumps.
Add coriander and season with salt.
Pour over the fish just before serving.

Oops...We missed Koesister Day on Sunday! Life happened but none the less here is a recipe that is so easy you won’t want to order your Sunday koesisters any more.

Mix the dough at night. It takes 10 minutes. And the next morning it will take you less than an hour to have the fluffiest, freshest, warm nuggets of deliciousness for breakfast.

Koesisters
Ingredients:
1 cup Sugar
2 tsp Salt
2 tsp Oil
1 kg Flour
2.5 tsp Ginger
2.5 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp Nutmeg
3 tsp Naartjie peel
2 tsp Aniseed
1 Egg
125g Mashed Potato
1tblsp Butter
3 cups Water – Lukewarm
1pkt Instant yeast

Syrup:
3 cups Sugar (to 2 cups water)
2 teaspoon rose water
Few elachi/cardamom and cinnamon sticks

Method:
Mix 1/3 sugar with mashed potato and butter. Blend till smooth. Add Egg
Mix 2/3 of the Sugar, salt and oil
Add water
Add yeast, flour and other dry ingredients
Make a soft dough
Cover and allow to rise overnight

Next morning, punch dough down lightly. Use oiled hands to make balls onto a floured surface. Cover and allow to rise for half an hour. Lightly pull into an oval shape and fry in deep oil.

Boil syrup ingredients together till it’s slightly thick and can coat a spoon. Keep warm on stove. Drop hot koeksisters in and remove to plate. Sprinkle to your hearts desire with dessicated coconut. Bask in the love and adoration of your loved ones.

Makes about 45. Freezes well before syruping. I left out the potato and naartjie peel and it was still the best ever.
